Yearly Panaga School Yearbook

Panaga School was established in 1948. It is situated in the Brunei Shell residential camp of Panaga between the oil towns of Kuala Belait and Seria.

The school occupies a split site with a distance of approximately 700 metres between the three buildings. The youngest children attend the Mendaram Building (Nursery). Children then progress to the adjacent Rampayoh Building (Milepost 1). The older children are taught in the Teraja Building (Milepost 2 & 3).

Background

Panaga School differs from most other primary schools in that the parents of the majority of our children are working for the oil and gas industry. There are currently 8 Shell schools to be found around the world in locations where Shell operates; namely Gabon, Nigeria, Oman, Bintulu, Russia and Brunei. The schools range in size from just twenty pupils on roll, to Panaga - which is the largest Shell school - with the current enrolment of 535 pupils.

Shell schools have changed in recent years. Previously, the core student population was either British or Dutch. Panaga School now has children from 42 different nations. The teachers at Panaga are British, Dutch, Australian, New Zealanders and Canadian. The curriculum has also changed to meet the needs of the children.

Aims and Standards

Panaga School aims to provide a high standard of education in a style which closely matches each pupilís own aptitudes and abilities.
We aim to ensure that :
  - All our pupils receive equal opportunities and treatment.
  - All our pupils learn to appreciate and respect the diversity of cultures and languages in the school and learn to be aware of the international world.
  - All our pupils are entitled to have access to a broad and balanced curriculum that builds on what a child already knows, understands and can do.
  - All our pupils will be given learning experiences that will be structured to challenge them to achieve their maximum potential academically and socially.
  - All our pupils will have opportunities to develop their self-confidence and self esteem.
  - All our pupils will be encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards learning.
  - All our pupilsí work will be valued and represent a good standard, in all respects, for each childís age and ability.

Organisation

Currently Panaga School provides education for children from 3-12 years of age. From August 2017 the school will extend provision to include classes for children aged 13.

There are 2 sites; Teraja which caters for 7-12 years and Rampayoh (including Mendaram) which caters for 3-7years.

As in all Shell schools, the main curriculum taught is the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), the core subjects of Mathematics and English follow the British National Curriculum guidelines.

Mission Statement
Panaga School provides learning supported by an International Curriculum that empowers children with the knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to be productive members of an ever changing, culturally-diverse world community.

The school offers an NTC programme for children who speak Dutch as a first language as well as a Mother Tongue programme for children who have French, German or Spanish as their first language.

Currently there are 29 classes. DE, PE and Music are taught by Specialists and there is an Additional Needs Team which supports children with EAL or children that require additional support in other areas.

Year groups are split into four phases: Early Years, Milepost 1, Milepost 2 and Milepost 3. In August 2017 classes catering for children aged 11-13 will be referred to as the Middle Years.

The school is led by the Principal along with the 2 Head Teachers and 2 Deputy Head Teachers, 1 of each at the 2 different sites (Rampayoh and Teraja).
